Mitchell's Obscure Biblical Trivia
Welcome to Mitchell's Obscure Biblical Trivia!

Some friends of mine have helped me create a Java-Script version of my Bible Quiz, hosted here on the F.U.N.Y. (Freethinkers of Upstate New York) website.

The javascript version is going to direct everyone's comments, questions, praise, and hate mail to this post. General comments or reactions to the quiz should be posted here.

But if you have any specific comments on specific questions, please post them in the appropriate thread below:

FUNY, that's fabulous. Is it sort of an intellectual antidote to CUNY/SUNY ?

FUNY

I guess it is. :)

The original name was "Upstate Atheists", but apparently the name "atheist" carries too many negetive connotations with it. :)

I'm in Rochester, but the FUNY meetings I attend (if I ever attend) are in Syracuse.

I'm wowed by what you've gone through.

I asked a few questions in Convert_Me, and I read many posts of other users. The reason I found you interesting was because I noticed your responses to different beliefs. I couldn't decide what religion or belief system you held, you seemed to oblige to...many.So I read your bio on why you're an athiest...it made me sad.

Of all the hundreds of debates you've had with all the different theists, athiests, whoevers, etcs. I was wondering what you covered about God in the Bible and the unjustly way he went about murdering people. This seemed to be so strong for your case of becoming an athiest. Out of curiosity, I'd like to know how the parties involved in your debates responded. How did they justify God killing people? Did they hold The Maker in a higher regard than man when it came to murder?

Of course, only if you want to respond.Thank you.

How strange... LJ didn't send me an email about any of the comments in this thread... (I wonder if I accidentally turned something off or something)...

I've been meaning to update that essay. I've a lot to add to it... haven't found the time though...

Out of curiosity, I'd like to know how the parties involved in your debates responded. How did they justify God killing people?

The most common apologetic I've heard is: "Who are you, O man, to talk back to God?" (Romans 9:20). Biblicists tend to say God is so much above us that He can kill whomever he pleases (and he doesn't have to explain himself).

I'm not open-minded, you know this by now. And so, I found it very unusual and new that the Cobain poster on convert me claims to be married to the dead Mr. Cobain himself (yes I'm wasting my time looking at her journal). I'm wondering if you've ever come across a person who believes they are married to a spirit and they have astral sex (or whatever she called it)? Do you suppose that the journal is just a joke or is one of many journals in a fantasy life?

I'm wondering if you've ever come across a person who believes they are married to a spirit and they have astral sex

I remember losing my respect for that particulary person a long time ago (in the [info]atheist community), but I don't remember why... it might've been for something as stupid or stupider than "astral sex", but it's hard to say...

As a rule, I try to avoid New Agers and New Age beliefs--simply because the members of these groups have no political power (they don't try to force others to agree with them, and they don't claim to be "logical"). So really, I know little to nothing about them. :(

Do you suppose that the journal is just a joke

I believe people can delude themselves into just about anything. She might just be a nut-job.

Then again, how different is her claim to marriage from a Christian woman who calls herself a "bride of Christ"?

...which raises another question... why don't Christian "brides of Christ" desire astral sex from Jesus? Perhaps "astral sex" is just another word for "inspiration". Maybe our Cobain freak is just inspired by Kurdt's legecy and she wants to say 'thank you' to him in some way. This is the root of all "worship" in my opinion.

cheers,

MITCHELL

Okay, now you're making me sick.

Worship in a Christian sense is pleasing God with our actions. I can't imagine anything like real sex being what God is after with our worship. I think though the idea of intimacy in a marriage with true love and partnership is a picture of the intimacy we are supposed to have with God. It's not erotic, but it's as intense. Like the song by Peter Gabriel "In Your Eyes" gives the dual idea of adoration for God (all be it a non-Christian one from my understanding) and for a lover.

I do not desire anything "sexy" from Christ, but I do desire to be with Him. Maybe the connection would actually be deeper than "sex." However, I am expected to "produce fruit" which is the result of a relationship with Jesus just as children are a result from physical relations in a fertile male and female. I'm sure the parallel to erotic language can be made (and has often) in reference to Christ and the Church.

I guess the difference is in how I think of Christ. I do not imagine sex with Him and find it offensive to do this. I don't fantasize in this way about my Lord. I do want to adore him in a different way than I adore my husband.

I have been taught that there are many Greek words for love. It is my understanding that there is Eros (erotic love...sex), philia (friendship) and agape(love of God) and others. I do not know if eros is ever used when describing the adoration between Jesus and the Church or believers, but I think it is not.

Interesting concept and I need my sleep...

Yes, yes. But I see the root of all worship (including that) in trying to say "thank you" to someone or something (see my Birth of God essay).

I do not desire anything "sexy" from Christ, but I do desire to be with Him.
What exactly does that mean? When you are finally "with Him", what is going to happen? Will he just put his arm around you or something?Maybe run his fingers through your hair...

Maybe the connection would actually be deeper than "sex."
Of course it is. ;) (See by Birth of Morality essay).

I think it's more of a parental relationship than sexual/erotic to be honest. Leader/follower...teacher/student. Also, no running fingers through hair. I am not really amused with that idea.

What will happen when I am with Jesus? I don't know what I will do. I'm hoping he says I've done well with everything. I'm hoping to see him...and know it will come eventually (there would be many people there who have lead lives more worthy to be first in line to speak to Christ). I imagine getting a time to worship in a way, as you say, show gratitude. I imagine being able to get to know others there. I can't completely imagine what will happen as there is only a sketch in the bible.

Do you have a teacher or parent or some other person you respect as an elder? As wise? I remember being a child and looking to my Grandfather with great love and respect. He took care of me, helped me out, listened to me, loved me despite my faults, and even bragged about me. There was a relationship that was joyful without eros. That's similar to how I expect my relationship to Christ to be.
